Vocab Cards is a vocabulary card file with built-in dictionaries and spaced-repetition review: this website, and the iPhone and iPad app, which the App Store lists as Vocab Cards: Word Flashcards. It is made by Fadil Karim, who is “we” below. Using any of it means you accept these terms. They are short and written to be read. What is kept about you is set out in the privacy policy, a separate page.
What this is
A tool for learning words. The dictionaries are compiled from open sources, among them Wiktionary, OpenRussian, CC-CEDICT and JMdict, all named at the foot of the website and of the app’s Account tab. Like any dictionary they are approximate: a meaning, a pronunciation, a gender or a frequency may be wrong or missing. They also include everyday, slang and vulgar words, as full dictionaries do. Vocab Cards is not a professional translation service, so do not rely on it where a mistake could cause harm, as in medical, legal or safety matters. The review schedule is a study aid, not a promise of results. We correct errors when we learn of them, and would rather hear of one than not, but we cannot promise that everything is right or complete.
Using it
Vocab Cards is free. You may use it for your own learning and for teaching. You may not try to break into it or into anyone’s account, overload it (for example with automated requests at a rate that slows it for others), or use it for anything unlawful. It is made for a general audience and is not directed at children; accounts are for people aged 13 and over.
Accounts
An account is optional: it keeps your file in step between the website and the app. If you make one, give an email address that reaches you, keep your password to yourself, and choose a username that does not impersonate anyone or offend; we may ask you to change one that does. One account is one person. You can see what your account holds and delete it at any time, in the app’s Account tab or on the website’s Account page; the account deletion page gives the steps. We may suspend or delete an account that is used to break these terms.
If you ask for product updates, we send occasional emails about Vocab Cards, to you and no one else, until you switch them off.
What you save to your account, your words, lists, settings and review history, is yours. We store it only to give it back to you, we show it to no one else, and it goes when the account does.
The material and its licences
Vocab Cards’s own words and design are © Fadil Karim, and its source code is licensed under the MIT licence that comes with it.
The dictionaries and recordings belong to their contributors and come under their own licences, which these terms do not change: Wiktionary (by way of kaikki.org and WikDict), OpenRussian, CC-CEDICT, JMdict, wordfreq and Lexique under Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike licences, UniMorph under CC BY-SA 3.0, the CMU Pronouncing Dictionary under a BSD licence and jieba under the MIT licence; each recording from Wikimedia Commons is under the licence its own page states. The typefaces are under the SIL Open Font License, and the review schedule uses the open FSRS algorithm. Anything you take from those sources you take under their licence, not ours.
The app
The app from the App Store is licensed to you under Apple’s standard Licensed Application End User License Agreement, which governs the licence of the app itself where these terms say less. Apple is not responsible for the app or its content, and has no obligation to support it. These terms govern the content and the service.
Availability and changes
We may add, change or remove features at any time. We do not promise that the website, the app or the account service will always be available, and we may take them down for maintenance or for good.
No warranty, and the limit of our liability
Vocab Cards is provided as it is and as available, without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including that it is accurate, complete, fit for a particular purpose or free of errors. To the fullest extent the law allows, we are not liable for any loss or damage arising from your use of it or your reliance on anything in it, including indirect or consequential loss and the loss of saved data. Nothing in these terms excludes or limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that cannot be excluded under the law of England and Wales, and nothing in them affects the rights you have as a consumer under the law where you live.
Ending
You may stop using Vocab Cards at any time, and delete your account at any time. We may end your access, or your account, if you break these terms, and we may end the service as a whole with notice on the site.
The law
These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales have jurisdiction over any dispute, except that if you live elsewhere and the law there gives you the right to bring a claim at home, you keep it.
Changes to these terms
If these terms change, the date below changes with them, and a change that matters is announced on the site. Using Vocab Cards after a change means you accept the terms as changed. On 24 October 2026 the name changed from Vocab Folio to Vocab Cards; the terms did not.
